These poppies (papaver somniferum) are stunning this year. There are only a few left flowering, though the seed pods are gorgeous too. They aren’t at all fussy, and next year I’ll be more discerning about where I let them naturalize — not at the front of  the beds. They do produce a sticky exudate, and can be called opium poppies, though how much of the drug they’d actually produce is debatable. I prefer to call them by their other name — breadseed poppies.

The hollyhocks are spectacular too, all in all a good year for pink flowers.
